Melania Trump and Bullying: Hey, Liberals, What Happened to ‘When They Go Low, We Go High’
Progressives Should be Judging Melania Trump on her Character and Ideas Rather Than Her Clothes
There is no doubt that when Melania Trump made a speech yesterday at the UN on bullying it was both ridiculous and hypocritical. The wife of America’s Bully-in-Chief speaking out against bullying? You just can’t make it up.
But, then, something unfortunate happened. Instead of focusing on the absolute hypocrisy of her speech, some progressive commentators decided instead to take part in their own form of bullying, and it deserves being called out.
As Yahoo Style describes it, Melania took to the podium to give her speech wearing “a $2,950 Delpozo fuchsia, knee-length coat with billowing sleeves and matching heels.” And, quickly, this dress become a lightening rod for jokes and mocking online.

Now, think what you may about Donald Trump, Melania, or her ridiculous speech, isn’t it time we got passed this attacking women for what they wear thing? Isn’t that what many on the left have been working hard to do for years now? It should be seen as no less acceptable to attack Melania Trump on what she wears as it would be to attack Elizabeth Warren or Hillary Clinton on what they wear.

What was important about her anti-bullying speech was the content which, although not bad in terms of the ideas presented, was rendered completely meaningless and ridiculous thanks to her husband. It’s the ideas here that deserve to be ripped apart, not how she decided to dress. It really shouldn’t matter what she decides to wear up there on stage.
There is another aspect which should be kept in mind. When going low by attacking Melania on how she is dressed, it gives ammunition to Trump supporters to rip into progressives. It turns Melania into a victim and even a martyr who is under attack by the hypocritical left. And, then the horses circle. Fox News and the Washington Examiner, as well as many conservatives, were very quick to pick up on this misstep by the left, and they aren’t wrong in their criticism here.

When former First Lady Michelle Obama made her speech at the Democratic National Convention, saying “When they go low, we go high,” it was met with cheers and became a powerful, inspirational quote for many. And it’s absolutely worth keeping this phrase in mind. Right now, Republicans and conservatives seem to be going lower and lower and lower on a daily basis. That’s not a place progressives should be going. They are going low. Let’s go high. Let’s practice what we preach, people.
