Joe Biden Marries A Gay Couple Four Years After Pushing Obama Into Supporting Same-Sex Marriage

The man affectionately known as Uncle Joe Biden just proved how damn cool he is by officiating a same-sex marriage ceremony.

Who were the lucky couple? They were White House staffers Brian Mosteller and Joe Mahshie. In case you are wondering, OUT says that the ceremony was at 4 pm. Seems like a good time to get married, no? It was a small affair, held at the Veep’s house, with the families of the happy couple in attendance.

Yup, this indeed was the first same-sex marriage Joe Biden has officiated; doing so after the happy couple requested his services. So, Joe did it. He got himself a temporary certification and then performed the ceremony.

Biden Is Credited With ChangING Obama’s Public Stance On Same-Sex Marriage

Joe Biden is definitely someone that many in the LGBT community would call an “ally.” He almost single handedly forced the White House, Obama and the Democrats to back same-sex marriage in the 2012 election, as Slate points out.

He publically declared his support while the White House was still toeing the line that marriage equality wasn’t something they were big on, most likely to not loose voters. Well, Biden came through and went public with his views, forcing Obama’s hand and opening the door to the fight for same-sex marriage recognition in that that election.

Biden opened up to Chad Griffin of the LGBT advocacy group Human Rights Campaign at a same-sex marriage he attended where the couple had two kids. Chad asked him about his personal views on the subject. Given the White House’s official line, Joe was a bit nervous, but ended up letting loose as the New York Times reports.

“I look at those two beautiful kids. I wish everybody could see this. All you got to do is look in the eyes of those kids. And no one can wonder, no one can wonder whether or not they are cared for and nurtured and loved and reinforced. And folks, what’s happening is, everybody is beginning to see it. Things are changing so rapidly, it’s going to become a political liability in the near term for an individual to say, “I oppose gay marriage.” Mark my words. “And my job — our job — is to keep this momentum rolling to the inevitable.”

And, with that, the White House position was forced to change and the rest is history. Say what you want about Joe Biden, but on this issue, he nailed it.
