Mike Pence Policy Paper: No Jobs For Gays
This Is Only The Most Recent Discovery in Pence’s Homophobic History
Republican Vice Presidential Nominee Mike Pence has a clear disdain for the LGBTQ community. It was clear when he represented Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District and warned that same-sex marriage would lead to “societal collapse“. It was more than obvious when he was governor, signing the most restrictive anti-LGBT bill in the nation into law. He was quite transparent in arguing against the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”. And now Right Wing Watch has uncovered just how long hostility towards gays has been “his thing”.
In examining the works published by Pence as head of the Indiana Policy Review — which he chaired from 1991-1994 — RWW discovered some shockingly abhorrent language regarding homosexuality itself and how gays should be treated in the workplace:
In one item titled “The Pinked Newsroom,” published in the December 1993 issue, the publication lamented that The Wall Street Journal took part in a job fair for gay journalists. The piece claimed that “gaydom” was a “pathological condition” and argued that LGBT editors and reporters should not keep their sexuality a secret because it might slant their coverage. “[T]he more extreme of the gay movement consider themselves members of a sexual determined political party,” the piece explained.

Pence Journal Vehemently Fought Gays In The Military
While Pence would eventually fight “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in congress, the IPR resisted even the idea of homosexuals serving in the military in the first place. The publication went so far as to link homosexuality with pedophilia. Right Wing Watch notes:
A few months earlier, in August 1993, the journal, with Pence on the masthead, published a piece objecting to the idea of gay people serving in the military. The article, written by Col. Ronald Ray, a senior fellow at the [name foundation], stated that “homosexuals are not as a group able bodied. They are known to carry extremely high rates of disease brought on because of the nature of their sexual practices and the promiscuity which is a hallmark of their lifestyle.”
The article went on to list what the author described as “‘gay’ sexual practices” in great detail. It then claimed that proponents of allowing gays to serve in the military ignore “counter-espionage case histories involving homosexuals who became traitors through blackmail.”
Finally, Ray attempted to link homosexuality to pedophilia by citing NAMBLA and quoting a publication which claimed that “the love between man and boys is at the foundation of homosexuality.”
As abhorrent as this language is, it unfortunately fits the GOP ticket perfectly. Their Presidential nominee has a well-known disregard for every demographic that isn’t white, heterosexual, male, Christian and poorly educated. The infamous homophobia of Mike Pence marries brilliantly with every other phobia Donald Trump exhibits.
Donald Trump recently asked people of color what the hell they have to lose by voting Trump. For Americans of every color, nationality, orientation and religion, that answer is pretty simple: everything.
Selecting a blatant homophobe like Mike Pence to be his VP only reinforces that.
