Mother Of Matthew Shepard Warns Against Trump: ‘I Know What Can Happen As A Result Of Hate’ (VIDEO)
Judy Shepard Won’t Sit By Silently And Watch History Repeat Itself
Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has been unlike any America may have ever seen. It has been a wall-to-wall hatefest that just keeps getting more bizarre and dangerous with every campaign stop, and no one knows quite what will happen next.
One person who is understandably worried is a woman who knows all too well the effects of hate and what the result can be. Attitude magazine reports on a new ad released by a pro-Hillary super PAC called Priorities USA that features Judy Shepard, the mother of Matthew Shepard, talking about where the hate she has been fighting so hard against can lead people.
“I’ve seen what can happen as the result of hate. My son Matt was murdered in Laramie Wyoming in 1998. He was befriended by two men in a bar who pretended to be gay. They offered him a ride home and when he was in their car, they robbed him and beat him. They drove Matt out to the prairie and tied him to a split-rail fence, then beat him some more and left him for dead.”
The killing of Matthew Shepard was a watershed moment in American history. It is when the issue of violent homophobia became front and center and many Americans said, “Enough is enough!” Judy and her husband Dennis were thrust into the spotlight and become strong advocates against homophobic hate and for diversity through the Matthew Shepard Foundation.
“In the aftermath of Matt’s death, my family saw the best of America in the love and support we were shown. So when I see the hate that Donald Trump has brought to his campaign for president, it terrifies me. Words have an influence. Violence causes pain. Hate can rip us apart. I know what can happen as a result of hate, and Donald Trump should never be our president.”
When it comes to LGBT issues, Donald Trump has had more of a libertarian stance, but the same cannot be said for his homophobic spewing sidekick Mike Pence.
Time magazine reports that Pence has a long history of LGBT hate that isn’t going away any time soon. He has said that being gay is a choice and same-sex marriage goes against “God’s plan.” He has rejected legislation that would protect the rights of LGBT workers because he felt it would infringe on religious rights. He was against the lifting of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” policy that the US Military had in place. And he was vocal against the Obama administration’s move to protect the rights of transgender Americans. Basically, when it comes to anything involving giving LGBT Americans dignity, respect and rights, he has been against it.
Add this homophobic hatred to Trump’s over the top rhetoric that has fueled hate and violence, and you have a volatile and scary situation.
