NY Legislator Trolls Pence’s Homophobia In The Most Clever Way Possible

Vice President Mike Pence Has Many LGBT people worried

It seems strange that only eight years ago, the country was having a strong debate about whether or not we should give a group of people the right to love someone without fear of prosecution. President Obama was a bit ambivalent in the early months of his presidency, but almost instantly turned that around, doing the most good for the gay community, including: repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, signing the “Hate Crimes Prevention Act”, overseeing the Supreme Court cases “United States v. Windsor” and “Obergefell v. Hodges”, and becoming the first President to use the words “gay” and “transgender” in the State of the Union address.

The LGBT community has suffered a lot over the centuries, and with transgenders being the next target by conservative groups, they still have a long way to go before true equality is reached. While the President’s actions were a huge step forward for the nation, it is very possible that the upcoming Trump Administration could see severe regressions. Trump himself has flip flopped so many times on the issue, that it is possible he personally will not pursue any form of action. His vice president-pick Mike Pence, on the other hand, has an ugly history.

As Politifact verified, Pence once advocated in 2000 that taxpayer dollars in Indiana be diverted towards funding conversion therapy. Conversion therapy, for those that do not know, is an abusive psychological program, usually backed by religious institutions, that attempts to “change” homosexuals into heterosexuals through a variety of repressive tactics that have been covered in extensive detail. Pence’s anti-gay initiatives did not end there, as, throughout the decade, he continued to oppose progressive measures like the aforementioned “Hate Crimes Act”, same-sex marriage, and civil unions, and even supported adding an amendment to the constitution that would define marriage as between a man and a woman.

Whether Pence will push any of these as Vice President remains to be seen, but that has not stopped LGBT activists from wanting to ruin his image for the future. In New York, a legislator by the name of Patrick Burke has put forward a bill that would protect the gay community by banning conversion therapy. The name of the legislation is the Prevention of Emotional Neglect and Childhood Endangerment, or P.E.N.C.E. for short. This humorous jab is not a coincidence, as Burke cited Pence’s past stance as the primary reason behind this bill initiative:

“Mike Pence is probably going to have the most power of any vice president in the history of our country and he has openly advocated for conversion therapy,” Burke told the new outlet. “I want that to sink into people. I want them to realize it’s a serious issue of abuse of children, Flatly, whether they are gay or not, it’s abuse.”

We genuinely hope it gets passed so Pence can live knowing his legacy will be of hypocrisy and shame.
