Trump’s Potential Science Advisor: C02 Is Being Persecuted Like Jews During Holocaust

Climate change denier-in-chief Donald Trump is searching for someone to be his science adviser, and he’s reportedly considering Princeton Atomic Physicist William Happer. And if there’s one thing that can be said about Happer, it’s this: He may be a scientist, but his critical thinking skills are pretty questionable.

Why do I say this?

For starters, he’s consistently rejected all the credible evidence regarding the risks of human-caused climate change—despite the fact that more than 97 percent of his fellow scientists agree that the warming trends over the past century “are extremely likely due to human activities.”  He’s been described as an “expert” on climate change, but his record of publishing on the subject is very nearly non-existent. Plus, his area of experience is atomic physics, which means he studies atoms — not climate science.

He’s become increasingly outspoken and offensive in his views on climate change and climate scientists, claiming they are “more like a cult,” Desmogblog reports.

“They’re glassy-eyed and they chant,” he told The Guardian. “It will possibly harm the image of all science.”

It would seem to me that a scientist who believes in chemtrails may do more harm to the image of science. Happer has also suggest that carbon dioxide is being persecuted by using this peculiar analogy:

“The demonization of carbon dioxide is just like the demonization of the poor Jews under Hitler.”

Happer, 77, is doing whatever he can to  promote CO2 at the expense of the environment.

In the mid-part of this century, Happer was affiliated with the George C. Marshall Institute, a conservative think-tank that spent most of its time spreading claims that concerns about global warming were over-hyped. As a former chair of the now-defunct institute, he was only too happy to take money from ExxonMobile, Desmogblog reports. That continued until the institute folded in 2015.

Does anyone really think that someone who takes money from ExxonMobile is going to be objective about climate change?

Now he’s the president of the CO2 Coalition which sports the tagline that CO2 is “vital for life.” On its website, the organization says:

“The debate about global warming and climate change has shifted from genuine scientific exploration to a campaign demonizing CO2. The use of energy, the primary source of human CO2 emissions, have played an essential role in the economic progress and improved standard of living that has been experienced in many nations since the Industrial Revolution.”

Happer has also been caught in a sting operation conducted by Greenpeace activists after he offered to write a report on the benefits of carbon dioxide for a fictitious fossil fuel client. He offered to help hide the report’s funding by requesting the payments be sent to the CO2 foundation.

While he did have a distinguished career working for the George H.W. Bush administration as a science director, his views on climate science are vastly outweighed by the mountain of credible evidence that’s out there,.

Professor Michael Oppenheimer, a fellow Princeton scientist who studies the climate, has written dozens of articles for leading journals going all the way back to the 1990s. The Guardian asked Oppenheimer what he thought about Happer.

“With respect to climate science and scientists,” Oppenheimer responded in an email, “[Happer] is not only unknowledgeable but appears to have become unmoored.”

Happer still harps on theories that have been debunked, Desmogblog reports. In an interview with Stefan Molyneux, a rabid climate change denier, he referenced the Phanerozoic eon, which began about 540 million years ago and stretches all the way to the present.

Happer contends that throughout this time period CO2 levels have been much higher. He suggests that everything was fine and maintains that everything would be fine even now if CO2 levels got up to 1,000 ppm.

But Dr. Nerillie Abraham, a climate scientist at Australian National University, debunks his claim.

“The Phanerozoic covers an enormous amount of Earth’s history — the last 541 million years. If we were to think about that time period as a single day, complex life first evolved at midnight and the age of the dinosaurs (252-66 million years ago) lasted from just after mid-day (12:49 p.m.) through to 9:04 p.m. Modern humans only evolved at 11:59 p.m. (0.2 million years ago).”

She continued:

“So even though the Earth was able to support the slow evolution of life when it had carbon dioxide in the parts per thousand level, sea levels were more than 100 meters higher than today, and land masses were completely different to the countries we currently live in, that planet was certainly nothing like the one that humans have ever lived upon.”

In his interview with Molyneaux, Happer also dismisses ocean acidification.

“There was no danger from ocean acidification … all of the other scare stories you read about. They just didn’t happen.”

But as Desmogblog notes, he’s completely wrong here. Ocean acidification wiped out at least 90 percent of all marine creatures during this time. Research published in the journal Science in 2015 bears this out, showing that huge influxes of CO2 into the atmosphere spurred a “mass dying” about 250 million years ago.

The president met with Happer on Friday, and since Trump thinks climate change is a hoax that was perpetrated by the Chinese, I’ll bet these two hit it right off.
