The Benghazi Witch Hunt Just Wasted A Bunch More Taxpayer Money Over GOP’s Hillary Hate
Benghazi continues to hurt taxpayers
Trey Gowdy, a Tea Party Republican best known for being the Chairman of US House Select Committee on Benghazi, has found himself in hot water with regards to the utilization of taxpayer money. The funds, totaling $150,000, were used by Gowdy to pay off the wrongful termination suit of an intelligence analyst named Bradley F. Podliska, who had joined the Benghazi Committee in September 2014 to help the investigation.
Podliska, however, was fired by Gowdy nine months after he was hired for not focusing enough on demonizing then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well taking a leave of absence to fulfill his Air Force reservist duties. Gowdy using this latter aspect to justify Podliska’s termination violated the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), resulting in him suing Gowdy in November 2015.
Though it has taken him nearly two years to find justice, Podliska has finally achieved it. As The Washington Post reports, the settlement’s specifics are being kept under wraps, but they can confirm that Gowdy spent $150,000 in taxpayer revenue to compensate Podliska.
Benghazi itself was a painful phase in US politics. Throughout President Obama’s second term, the Republican Party exhausted their political capital on perpetuating a scandal through the Benghazi Attacks, wherein two American compounds, including a diplomatic embassy, in Benghazi, Lybia were attacked by Islamic terrorists from the group Ansar al-Sharia.

The incident was a tragedy, resulting in several US intelligence and diplomatic officials dying, and subsequently prompted an investigation by Congress. However, while there were some genuine questions about the incident, the GOP sought to exploit the deaths of these honorable Americans by blaming them on Obama and Clinton.
Gowdy, was the leader of the investigation, which ended up becoming a partisan witch hunt as he sought to place as much fault on Clinton as was possible. That Podliska is being compensated for what happened is theoretically fine. However, it’s notable that none of this would have happened were it not for Gowdy being so determined to demonize Clinton.
Keep in mind that other congressman like John Conyers and Blake Farenthold have been using similar taxpayer funds, officially provided by the Congressional Accountability Act, to issue hush money for their own problems. In the case of both men, these were sexual harassment claims. Why taxpayers have to literally pay for the criminal behavior of their elected representatives is ridiculous, and needs to be revisited as more and more money is taken from it. Gowdy may be the latest incident, but he is far from the last.
