Ready For GOP Meltdown? Defense Dept Approves Transgender Therapy For Manning
There are a variety of differing opinions, even amongst liberals, about the imprisonment of Chelsea Manning — the soldier formerly known as Bradley Manning. Even with these different viewpoints amongst liberals, however, it’s pretty certain that they’ll enjoy the impending right-wing meltdown now that the Department of Defense has approved her request for hormone treatment for her transition to womanhood.
Chelsea Manning Hormone Therapy Approved
Chelsea is currently imprisoned at Fort Leavenworth for sending WikiLeaks over 700,000 classified documents while she was an Army private serving in Iraq. At the time, Chelsea was known as Bradley, but she legally changed her name in April 2014.
The day after Chelsea was sentenced to 35 years for espionage, her attorney announced that Bradley was a woman. While in the Army, she had been diagnosed with gender identity disorder. In a released statement, Chelsea said:
“As I transition into this next phase of my life, I want everyone to know the real me. I am Chelsea Manning. I am a female. Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible.”
The Army provided a mental health specialist, who was reportedly unqualified to assist with gender identity disorder, to Chelsea. After a lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court saying that Chelsea might perform her own castration and was at risk for suicide, Col. Erica Nelso approved hormone therapy for Manning.
Right-Wing Meltdown in 3… 2… 1
Regardless of how a person feels about the WikiLeaks issue, it’s almost a given that Republicans are going to go nuts over this. They couldn’t stand it, for instance, when Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was repealed in 2010. That meltdown was fun enough to watch, but now the Defense Department is providing therapy to help Chelsea complete her transition into a woman?
Even though homosexual individuals are now openly allowed in the military, there’s still a rule against transgender individuals wearing the uniform. This rule is pretty much useless, though, since the Army cannot discharge Chelsea while she’s serving her 35-year sentence.
Numerous corrections agencies — state, local and federal — provide hormone therapy for those with gender identity disorder. And although the treatment had already been approved by Chuck Hagel, the outgoing Secretary of Defense, the treatment had not yet begun for some reason. This will soon no longer be the case.
Okay, I can no longer hold it in. I’m simply giddy about how the Right is going to react to this. First Alabama is ordered to recognize and perform gay marriages, and now a transgender spy is being assisted in her transformation by the U.S. Government?
I vote “Best Week Ever!”
If you want a little idea of how Republicans might react to this, here’s what I’m envisioning:
