Chuck Schumer Just Trolled Mitch McConnell By Using His Own Words Against Him

Democrats Have A Champ In Chuck Schumer

Chuck Schumer just proved himself to be a Democrat with both an ability to cut through GOP hypocrisy and a wicked sense of humor. Even as Democrats sadly watch Harry Reid, who held his opponents’ feet to the fire many times, leave the senate, it seems as though his replacement may prove to be just as feisty!

In a remarkable showing of Democratic opposition, Chuck Schumer highlighted the current quagmire of unethical GOP actions, as well as their stunning hypocrisy, by sending Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, a letter.

That Mitch himself wrote. Eight years ago. In regards to the senate confirmation hearings for the people then-President-elect Barack Obama had selected to fill various cabinet positions.

Recently, the Office of Government Ethics sent the Senate Democrats a letter, informing them that Republicans had scheduled multiple confirmation hearings for some of Trump’s controversial cabinet appointees – and they have done so before the Office has been able to sufficiently vet them. That Republicans were pushing these hearings through before sufficient investigation is, OGE director Walter Shaub Jr., stated, a matter of “great concern.” Because the vetting has not been completed, Shaub said that some of the nominees could have “potentially unknown or unresolved ethics issues” that may not be addressed in the hearings slated to begin on Tuesday.

“I am not aware of any occasion in the four decades since OGE was established when the Senate held a confirmation hearing before the nominee had completed the ethics review process,” he added.

Chuck Schumer Proved 2 Major Points – Using Mitch’s Own Words

Still, Senate Republicans seem determined to ram these confirmations through. And so, in a genuine genius-level move, Chuck Schumer sent Mitch McConnell the following letter.

See how Schumer did that? All Democrats are asking for is that Republicans hold these appointees to the same standards that they – and Democrats, too – gladly held Obama’s appointees to eight years ago. By simply crossing out the sender – who was none other than Mitch McConnell himself – and replacing it with his own name, and then re-addressing it to Mitch, the conclusion is inescapable.

What the Republicans are doing, by rushing these confirmations through, is unethical – and far below the standards set by the previous administrations. Furthermore, it wonderfully underscores the fact that what Democrats are asking for – that each nominee be completely vetted – is merely a standard, reasonable request.

However, this new administration seems anything but standard or reasonable. And it sounds like Chuck Schumer may be just the guy to point that out.
