Internet rejoices as school honoring Confederate leader to be renamed for Barack Obama

School Named After Jefferson Davis To Become Barack Obama And The Internet Loves It

It will be a long time before the controversy regarding places and things receiving taxpayer dollars and honoring the traitorous side of the Civil War will be considered over. But steps continue to be taken to take these Confederate items and put them in more appropriate places. This includes the renaming of schools honoring members of the secessionist Confederacy. And one school, named after Jefferson Davis, just announced they will be renaming their institution after the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama.

Davis Magnet IB in Jackson Mississippi recently announced the Public Schools Board of Trustees voted to change the name of the school to Barack Obama Magnet IB after a vote on October 5. The Clarion-Ledger reports the school is predominantly African-American and the PTA president told the newspaper the former Confederate leader would probably not be too excited about the students being taught under his name.

PTA President Janelle Jefferson [said]…“Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep enslaved being named after him.”…

Jefferson said the school community wanted to rename the campus “to reflect a person who fully represents ideals and public stances consistent with what we want our children to believe about themselves.”

Jefferson told the newspaper the name change would go into effect for the 2018-2019 school year.

News of the change warmed quite a few hearts on Twitter, as the reaction proved to be overwhelmingly positive.

This isn’t the first school named after Barack Obama. Mississippi now joins at least eleven other states with schools named after the 44th President. Obama’s name also adorns the highway once known as “Old Dixie”.

The Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees is also considering changing the name of two other schools honoring Confederate figures, Lee Elementary and George Elementary.

There is little doubt the move, like many others, will anger and potentially bring threats from those claiming the Confederate “tradition” shouldn’t be forgotten. But honoring those that fought to maintain slavery is a dying art and, happily, America is gradually saying goodbye to the racist practice.
