World’s Longest Running Sci-Fi Show FINALLY Catches Up To Reality With 1st Female Star
After months of speculation, we’re finally getting a female doctor. And by that, I mean, a new Time Lord. Jodie Whittaker is now officially the 13th Doctor in the British sci-fi show, Doctor Who. When the show ran originally for 26 seasons, between 1963-1989, talks about a female doctor weren’t really mainstream. That all changed when the show returned in 2005. It had picked up quite the female audience by then. The announcement was made at the Wimbledon Championship and there are many that are happy to get a female Doctor.
Some do question Whittaker’s casting choice since the new head writer and executive producer for Doctor Who did work with Whittaker before on her hit crime drama, Broadchurch. But nonetheless, Chris Chibnall had this to say:
I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we’re thrilled to have secured our number once choice.
This may come as a shock to some, but Doctor Who has a pretty strong female audience. In fact, data shows that the viewership between genders is split. It is time for a female doctor. Names like Tilda Swinton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Nataline Dorman were named as choices should they cast a female. Women do enjoy the show and buy all the merchandise. To see a woman finally being able to portray The Doctor really means something to the female audience. That’s why many enjoy Doctor Who. There’s really no rules in regards to gender because someone new always comes in after every few years looking nothing like the previous person. Age, race, and sex shouldn’t matter when casting for a role like this.
As for being cast in the iconic role, Jodie Whittaker was quoted saying:
It feels completely overwhelming , as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not to be boxed in by what you’re told you can and can’t be. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.
Jodie Whittaker will be seen as the new Time Lord sometime in 2018.
