'Shut the F Up' DeVos gets Very DIS'-Honorary Degree at Chaotic College Commencement

‘Shut the F*ck Up;’ DeVos Commencement Appearance Devolves into Complete and Total Chaos (VIDEOS)

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos gave a train wreck of a commencement speech that was met with boos, hisses and students turning their backs to her at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Will Betsy DeVos learn to stay home?

At times, the heckling and boos were so loud she couldn’t continue, Mediaite reports.

Just one day prior to her speech, a petition protesting her appearance was signed by more than 50,000 students, alumni and friends at the historically black university. Then it was hand delivered to university officials.

But DeVos didn’t take the hint that she wasn’t wanted there. And if she didn’t know that, she sure knew it by the time her disastrous speech was over. The debacle was heavily documented on Twitter, thanks to several journalists who attended the affair.

She was showered with love (not really) while receiving an honorary doctorate:

And while DeVos spoke, scores of graduating students turned their backs on her.

The boos and heckling became so loud at some points that DeVos had trouble getting through her speech.

And at least one person offered words of encouragement (not really).

The audience grew so loud at one point that the university’s dean intervened, telling the crowd:

“If this behavior continues, your degrees will be mailed to you!”

This did not faze the graduates. The groundswell of boos and heckling grew even louder.

The Trump administration has been attempting to reach out to historically African-American universities, but this effort by DeVos definitely fell flat, The Washington Post reports. Students and alumni who protested her appearance said that outreach is nothing more than an empty gesture. And Trump’s treatment of African-Americans is markedly less than stellar. It’s no wonder that they feel this way.

And Devos’s speech comes at a time when there has been plenty of opposition to controversial speakers such as alt-right fanboys Richard Spencer and Milo Yiannopolous. With her love of fake science and belief in intelligent design, this woman is every bit as controversial.

I hope opposition to DeVos and others like her continues to grow. Universities are supposed to be places of education — not places of alt-right hate and fanaticism and disbelief in science.

If DeVos is booed and jeered enough times, maybe she really will “Shut the F*ck up.” But probably not soon enough for most of us.
