Bernie Sanders Shines As Ted Cruz Watches Two Of His Own Biggest Lies Gets Exposed

Senators Bernie Sanders and Ted Cruz had a spirited debate on CNN last night, and one exchange grabbed plenty of conservative attention. Cruz asked Sanders a question and, when the Senator from Vermont started with “I don’t know”, conservatives jumped at the chance to claim he had no idea what he was talking about.

Just one problem. They didn’t really listen to the rest of the interaction, or the next few minutes where two of Ted Cruz’s most notable lies got embarrassingly exposed for the world to see.

The right-leaning The Daily Caller noted the exchange in a post alluding to a victory for Cruz on the point. The moment starts with Cruz asking a question he thought would burn Sanders’ ideology, but quickly went the wrong way for the Texas Republican. (Full video below, exchange begins at 8:00 mark.)

CRUZ: …what is the difference between a socialist and a Democrat on taxes?

SANDERS: Well, I don’t know the answer to that because I don’t know what other Democrats –

CRUZ: – I don’t either! –

SANDERS: …As a democratic socialist, similar to the people in Denmark and Sweden and Norway and Finland, people who have by and large a much higher standard of living than we have, people who guarantee health care to all of their people as a right, where kids have…free preschool education, where retirement benefits are much more generous than the United States. This is what I do believe. I believe that in a civilized society, people, especially those on top, should be asked to pay their fair share so that every man, woman and child in our country can have a decent standard of living…We are the wealthiest nation in the history of the world. And Ted has got to explain why we have 28 million people without any health insurance, many more under insured, and, if he gets his way, another 15 million loses their insurance.

As effective as that was in explaining a big picture aspect of Sanders’ increasingly popular beliefs, what happened next was even more so.

An audience member, who happened to be both from Denmark and a conservative, questioned Sanders about wanting Scandinavian-like services but not asking for high enough taxes to pay for them. Sanders then asked the Danish citizen to describe many of the services in his home country and what a person would pay for health care visits (his answers: $10 co-pay doctor visits, free hospital), college (free, plus a stipend for living), and early child care ($200-$300 per month for high-quality preschool). All were far lower than what the average American would pay.

Cruz retorted with an attack about high taxes and on other health care systems because of wait times for surgeries. As Cruz was going through his weak verbal assault, Sanders asked the Danish citizen to come back up and confirm whether the Republican was being truthful. His response:

No, I think the general characterization of waiting list across the board is vastly incorrect. I’ll give you the example of my mother, who is hospitalized with cancer. She was treated in a matter of one or two days. And this is true on a number of issues. So, the demonization of health care systems in Europe is just not true.

It was then pointed out Denmark pays the highest tax revenue as a percent of GDP in the world, while the United States comes in well below that and dozens of other countries. Sanders later hammered home the fact Cruz was obviously lying about high taxes, as well.

Ted Cruz is telling us how high taxed we are. You [Jake Tapper] just told us we’re one of the lowest taxed countries in the world.

In short, if you watched a tiny portion of the clip, it may be taken out of context to show Bernie Sanders doesn’t know his stuff. But if you actually watch a little more, Ted Cruz gets exposed as a complete fool. So, when conservatives inevitably pass around the short video of Cruz supposedly winning, feel free to point out truth of the bigger picture.
