Elizabeth Warren Eviscerates GOP For Gutting Congressional Ethics In The Dark Of Night (TWEETS)

Elizabeth Warren Is The Voice We Need

UPDATE 1/3/17 11:21 CST: After a public outcry that grew increasingly louder over the late night move to remove all accountability from Congress, including from leading political voices such as Elizabeth Warren, House Republicans reversed course Tuesday. According to Politico, “House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) offered a motion to restore the current OCE rules, and that was accepted by the GOP conference.”

And it is because of voices like Elizabeth Warren, the GOP will continue to be held accountable for their actions and inaction. In fact, especially in light of the House’s reversal of course, Senator Elizabeth Warren continues to prove she is the right one to consistently take on the GOP under the Donald Trump administration.

After congressional Republicans met behind closed doors, in the night, with the explicit purpose to gut the government of oversight and accountability, Warren quickly became the mouthpiece America needs in these troubling times.

What Overturning The Law Means

As the Salon reported:

“The amendment would prohibit the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) from basing investigations off of anonymous tips against lawmakers, would limit the types of investigations about which they could publicly disclose their findings, and would even bar them from having a public spokesperson. Perhaps most ominously, the bill wouldn’t allow the OCE to refer potential criminal violations to law enforcement agencies without receiving prior permission from the House Committee.

“Several of the amendment’s key sponsors are congressmen who have themselves been targeted by OCE investigations. These include Rep. Blake Farenthold of Texas, who was accused of sexual harassment by a former staffer (the probe was ultimately dropped), and Rep. Pete Roskam of Illinois, who was accused of improperly accepting a gift from the Taiwanese government.”

We have an incoming president who will not or cannot have a press conference, is openly hostile to the media, and a Congress who is now actively working to overturn what little accountability and transparency is left in the government. Sounds like instead of draining the swamp, Republicans have decided it’s preferable to simply turn off the lights in hopes that America will forget the swamp if it’s hidden from view.

Elizabeth Warren, and other progressives like her, need to continue to be the voice in that darkness.
