Former NATO Ambassador Fact Checks Trump’s Ignorant Morning Tweets About the Alliance

Former U.S. Ambassador To NATO Ivo Daadler Schools Donald Trump On False Claims

Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel met yesterday in what was nothing short of an embarrassing disaster for the Republican president. Besides apparently refusing to shake Merkel’s hand during a photo op, Trump tried to pass the buck on his wiretapping allegations against Barack Obama by blaming Fox News. The coverage of this meeting was accurate, which means it pointed out the many mistakes the president made along the way. And in typical fashion, he sent out some early morning Tweets today whining about the coverage.

But in those Tweets he also made a claim about NATO and Germany that turns out to be…wait for it…not true. Trump stated, “Germany owes vast sums of money to NATO & the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany!”

One might think the administration was still smarting from having to assure the British government this week that it would stop lying about its surveillance activities. And another…
