GOP Slams Hillary For 'Strangle Carly Fiorina' Joke

No, GOP: Hillary Clinton Does NOT Want To Strangle Carly Fiorina (VIDEO)

Who wants to strangle Carly Fiorina?

Republicans are shocked and appalled — shocked and appalled, I tell you! — because Hillary Clinton actually laughed at a joke. CNN reports that during a campaign event in Derry, N.H., a veteran jokingly told Clinton he wanted to strangle Carly Fiorina. She then tossed her head back and guffawed heartily along with the audience.

As always, the pundits and the Twitterati took the moment out of context, as RNC spokeswoman Allison Moore slammed the Democratic front-runner for condoning violence against women.

“By laughing off a male questioner’s desire to strangle Carly Fiorina, Hillary Clinton and the Democrats have lost all credibility claiming to be a party that stands up for women. Jokes about committing acts of violence against women are always in poor taste and should be condemned every time.”

Whoa, wait a minute. Republicans suddenly care about women? Aren’t they the ones who tried to block the Violence Against Women Act back in 2013? Aren’t they the ones who who now seek to shut down Planned Parenthood and force women — and girls! — to have their rapists’ babies?

In any case, the man in Hillary’s audience clearly doesn’t really want to “strangle Carly Fiorina.” In fact, he immediately realized that what he’d just blurted out didn’t come out right, and apologized by saying, “I know that doesn’t sound very nice.” As for the laughter, Clinton and the audience were showing support for him and the story he told, not egging him on to actually strangle Carly Fiorina.

Carly Fiorina did just about the worst thing you can do to a person in America: She took his job.

If you watch the video footage in context, as shown below, you’ll see that the man — who happens to be a Vietnam veteran — was in the midst of telling a sad story that many in the room could relate to. He had a thriving career as an engineer at Hewlett Packard, who took pride in his work and in his employer, and who had excellent job reviews throughout his career.

And then Carly Fiorina took over Hewlett Packard and laid him and tens-of-thousands of other workers off, most of whom had done nothing to deserve getting fired. And when older workers get laid off, that often means the end of their careers: Many never find well-paying jobs in their fields ever again. During the Great recession alone, over 2.6 million older workers were permanently displaced from the workforce.

In America, where we strongly identify with our careers, where we depend on work to support ourselves and our families, and where good jobs are few and far between, taking someone’s job away is just about the worst thing you can do to a person.

No wonder this former HP worker doesn’t enjoy seeing the author of his ruin on TV all the time, and no wonder he joked about how he wanted to “reach through” his T.V. screen and strangle Carly Fiorina.

“She says she’s a great CEO. Every time I see her on TV, I want to reach through and strangle her. [apologetically] I know that doesn’t sound very nice.”

I mean, come on, people…Who hasn’t ever felt the urge to strangle the annoying talking-head-du-jour on your T.V. screen? This has nothing to do with violence against women. This has to do with the callous one percent’s economic, social and physical violence against working American families.

But of course, the Republicans try to make it about something else so we’ll forget why so many of us are angry at Carly Fiorina. It’s not because she’s a woman, it’s because she’s a greedy CEO who destroys jobs and people so she can suck companies dry for her own personal profit.

As for Hillary, I doubt she is able to relate to the pain this man and others in the room are feeling [full disclosure: This writer’s a Bernie Sanders supporter]. Too many of us live the despair of seeing all we’ve ever hoped for and worked towards slip away on a daily basis, whereas Clinton hasn’t experienced that since 2008. Still, she has a strong record on women’s issues, and certainly would never support strangling or any other actual physical threats against Carly Fiorina.

Here’s the video, including the part of that “strangle Carly Fiorina” exchange the GOP missed
