Twitter Erupts As President Trump Congratulates Himself on Widely Panned Press Conference
There Was A Surreal Reaction On Twitter From President Trump, His Allies And His Opponents To His Press Conference
President Donald Trump’s hastily arranged, 77-minute long Thursday press conference was anything but routine. Global media outlets have classified it as “confidently unhinged“, “meandering“, “chaotic“, “sociopathic“, “bizarre” and “alternative reality“. And it wasn’t just the outlets which the president has deemed “fake news” that were critical. Much to the chagrin of his audience, Fox News’ Shepard Smith said:
“It’s crazy what we’re watching every day. It’s absolutely crazy. He keeps repeating ridiculous, throwaway lines that are not true at all and sort of avoiding this issue of Russia as if we’re some kind of fools for asking the question. Really? Your opposition was hacked and the Russians were responsible for it and your people were on the phone with Russia on the same day it was happening and we’re fools for asking the questions? No sir.”
Yet the president got the approval from the only demographic he’s concerned with. Taking to (you guesses it) twitter, the President shared the accolades from conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh while simultaneously deeming all criticisms “fake news”:
Thank you for all of the nice statements on the Press Conference yesterday. Rush Limbaugh said one of greatest ever. Fake media not happy!

This gave users the opportunity to kick their President’s Day Weekend off by airing their grievances with the current officeholder in spectacular fashion.
Trump’s especially strange interaction about the Congressional Black Caucus inspired some responses:
@realDonaldTrump I also liked the part when you thought all black people are friends with each other.

So did his “word salad” approach.
@realDonaldTrump But seriously, that press conference was GREAT, the greatest since JESUS!

A few users were more blunt and honest in their assessment.
@realDonaldTrump That press conference was a national disgrace of historic proportion.

@realDonaldTrump You didn’t watch it. Huh? DON’T. It was honestly one of the most disjointed and dishonest press conferences I’ve ever seen.

@realDonaldTrump it sucked. you're a loser.

While others targeted the object of Trump’s affection.

Many offered free psychological advice.
@realDonaldTrump You're worryingly delusional. The conference was a complete shambles. You were extremely rude to attending journalists.
— Mike P Williams (@Mike_P_Williams) February 17, 2017
Memes and cartoons were prominently featured.

The president’s erroneous claim to have had the largest electoral college win since Ronald Reagan was openly fact-checked and mocked.

Here’s a rather zen approach to fake news.
.@realDonaldTrump If you had a press conference with the media you call fake, did it actually happen?
— Jordan Uhl (@JordanUhl) February 17, 2017
As one would expect, Saturday Night Live was often referenced in the response tree.
@realDonaldTrump, the press conference was a complete disaster. It's difficult to tell the difference between SNL and the real thing.

— Andrew Husband (@AndrewHusband) February 17, 2017
@realDonaldTrump Everyone was happy. It was comedy gold. The Black Caucus, Uranium, really fake news…you gave SNL material for years!

But above all else, this twitter account spoke for tens of millions of Americans perfectly.
