Trump: If My New FBI Yes Man Clears Foreign Agent Flynn, I’ll Hire Him Back
Even though revelations about former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn keep dropping like acid rain, Donald Trump still wants to rehire him if the FBi’s investigation is resolved in his favor by whomever Trump chooses to head the agency. If any other president was trying to do this, most of us would think this was insane. But it’s Donald Trump, so it’s just business as usual, it seems.
Rehiring Flynn is another one of Trump’s bad ideas
And apparently, when the retired general was hired by the Trump administration, he told them he was being investigated for undisclosed lobbying on behalf of a foreign country — Turkey, The Daily Beast reports.
And according to Michael Ledeen, a friend of the former NSA adviser, he didn’t want the job to begin with.
“He did not want to be National Security Adviser,” Ledeen told The Daily Beast. “He didn’t want to be in the government. He wanted to go back to private life.”
But this failed to discourage Trump, who “has expressed his hopes that a resolution of the FBI’s investigation in Flynn’s favor might allow Flynn to rejoin the White House in some capacity.” The President’s advisers inside and outside the White House have reportedly told him that bringing Flynn back in any capacity would definitely be a bad idea.
This hasn’t dissuaded the Donald, however.
“Trump feels really, really, really bad about firing him, and he genuinely thinks if the investigation is over, Flynn can come back,” said one White House official.
He wound up being fired by Trump after it was revealed that the former NSA adviser lied publicly and privately to Vice President Mike Pence about his connections to Russian government officials, Raw Story reports. Former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates had warned the president about Flynn’s falsehoods, but apparently her warnings fell on deaf ears because it took him 18 days to ax him. And it only happened after a report about his talks with Russian officials appeared in The Washington Post.
Following this, reports have shown Flynn was under federal investigation because of his work lobbying for the Turkish government, which happened just as he was appointed National Security Adviser.
Even outgoing president Barack Obama warned Trump that hiring Flynn was a bad idea, CNN reports. Obama warned Trump during their November 10 meeting in the Oval Office.
“Given the importance of the job, the President thought there were better people for it, and that Flynn wasn’t up for the job,” said one former senior Obama administration official.
Trump, ever the bull in the world’s china shop, just galloped ahead blindly and picked Flynn anyway, regardless of anyone’s advice. But again, this is just business as usual for him. Just think: if he isn’t impeached, this is merely the beginning.
