Jimmy Carter Makes Haters’ Heads Explode: ‘I Believe Jesus Would Approve Gay Marriage’ (VIDEO)
Want to make some anti-gay, “Christian” right-wingers’ heads explode? Watch our 38th President Jimmy Carter do it brilliantly, in last week’s interview with HuffPo…and then share it with your favorite “homophobic” bigot.
In his chat with Marc LaMont Hill, Carter talked about his faith, teaching Sunday school at his tiny local church, and his new book, “A Full LIfe: Reflections at Ninety.” Then, Hill asked what Carter thought about the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in favor of marriage equality. And Carter replied:
“I think everybody should have a right to get married, regardless of their sex.”
And then Carter drops the bomb.
“I don’t have any verse in scripture…I believe that Jesus would approve gay marriage, but that’s just my own personal belief.”
Although this belief isn’t rooted in scripture, Carter’s a devout Christian and born-again Baptist who can thump his Bible with the best of them. Carter reads the same Bible as the anti-gay, right-wing “Christian” bigots do, but believes Jesus is about love, and that sexual morality is about consent, not about a strict, patriarchal definition of marriage.
“I think Jesus would encourage any love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else, and I don’t see that gay marriage damages anyone else.”
Of course, these statements have made the right-wing “Christian” bigot crowd go ballistic. The National Catholic Register accuses Carter of making Jesus his pro-gay “sock puppet.”
Not because Carter is projecting onto Jesus a view I believe or that the Catholic Church teaches is wrong, but because Carter is projecting onto Jesus, whom he regards (as do I) as the epitome of goodness and righteousness, Carter’s own ideas about what is good and right.
But wait…Conservatives abuse Jesus all the time to justify their extremely un-Christlike stance on just about everything, but it’s not okay for liberals to take the things Jesus actually said about love, tolerance and caring for one another as proof that Jesus wants us to be loving, tolerant and caring?
