Trump’s Dangerous Attack on Free Speech Stirs Harsh Response From the NFL

Donald Trump Is OK With ‘Very Fine’ White Supremacists, But Not So Much With NFL Players On Free Speech

After the domestic terror attack in Charlottesville that killed Heather Heyer, Republican Donald Trump had the audacity to call white supremacists “very fine people”. So when it comes to athletes using their right to free speech to protest the treatment of African-Americans in America, what is Trump’s response? To call players like Colin Kaepernick a “son of a bitch” and say they should be fired.

Trump held a rally in Alabama last night and, as usual, said some stunningly ridiculous things. He took aim at the NFL for allowing players to protest the National Anthem and for the league trying to make the game safer for those players. As noted by Sports Illustrated:

Regarding anthem protests, Trump said: “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he’s fired. He’s FIRED!’ You know, some owner is gonna do that. He’s gonna say, ‘That guy disrespects our flag; he’s fired.’ And that owner, they don’t know it. They don’t know it. They’re friends of mine, many of them. They don’t know it. They’ll be the most popular person, for a week. They’ll be the most popular person in this country.”

Apparently, Trump’s goal was to try to stop the protests. It appears it will have the opposite effect.

As of this writing, Shaun King of The Intercept reports at least “35 new players” will be taking part in protest in the NFL tomorrow.

It should probably come as no surprise numerous NFL players, the Players’ Union and even the NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell publicly weighed-in and condemned Trump’s comments. Many took to Twitter to slam the Republican for his divisiveness and stepping in where he doesn’t belong.

Maybe this kind of talk by Donald Trump plays to his base in terms of attacking free speech. But most involved will find it pretty disgusting. And tomorrow we shall see just how many NFL players he fired up to take a stand against his divisiveness.
