NFL Star: Police Threatened to ‘Blow My F*cking Head Off’

Seattle Seahawks Star Michael Bennett Shares Story Of Police Brutality

There are still many people in the United States that don’t believe there is racism in either the justice system or the folks who are supposed to be peace officers. But as anyone paying the slightest bit of attention knows, that simply isn’t true. And all one needs to do to prove this is show that even being rich or famous doesn’t save one from the perception they might be a criminal simply because of the color of their skin.

Another terrifying example of this was laid out by Seattle Seahawks star defensive end Michael Bennett. The two-time Pro-Bowler and Super Bowl XLVIII Champion took to Twitter to relay the story of his night in Las Vegas after the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor super fight. He started by saying people heard what sounded like gun shots in the area and he, like many others, began running and looking for safety. Then, things went south:

A police officer ordered me to get on the ground…he placed his gun near my head and warned me that if I moved he would “blow my fucking head off.”…a second Officer came over and forcefully jammed his knee into my back making it difficult for me to breathe. They then clinched the handcuffs on my wrists so tight that my fingers went numb.

Bennett was, unsurprisingly, fearful he would lose his life at that moment and stated the “excessive use of force was unbearable”. He later relays the officers released him after confirming his identity and realizing he was a professional football player.

Michael Bennett has joined in the widespread protests across the NFL started by Colin Kaepernick over the continued mistreatment of people of color, particularly by the justice system. Bennett pointed to previous tragedies in his statement.

The system failed me. I can only imagine what Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, and Charleena Lyles felt.

The NFL star indicated he will be exploring legal options against the Las Vegas Police for the incident.

TMZ obtained a brief video of the beginning of the encounter. The video shows Bennett on the ground being handcuff with an officer on his back. Bennett is rather calmly complying with the orders despite the obvious injustice of the event.

As if we needed another example, the color of one’s skin continues to put innocent people in jeopardy simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time in America. And who knows what may have happened to the unjustly handcuffed victim if the person caught in this incident wasn’t rich and famous? To state the obvious: we still have a long way to go in fixing racism in the justice system.
