BREAKING: The UN Just Rebuked Trump & Israel, Backed Obama
U.S. abstain as UN votes against Trump and Israeli settlements
The United Nations just voted and passed a resolution against Israeli settlements, ignoring Israel’s threats, and above all, Donald Trump’s demand of a veto from the United States. The U.S. not only ignored Trump’s call for a veto, but decided to abstain in the voting process. The UN Security Council voted with 14 votes in favour, and an abstention from the United States, a resolution that demands Israel to stop all settlement activities inside the occupied Palestinian territories.

The resolution, which was originally proposed by Egypt, was supposed to be voted upon on Thursday but it was withdrawn after strong pressure from Israel and U.S. president-elect Donald Trump. However, other members of the UNSC put forward the resolution considering it essential for the peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Arab conflict and a future two-state solution. As explained by Al Jazeera,
“It was adopted with 14 votes in favour, to a round of applause. It is the first resolution the Security Council has adopted on Israel and the Palestinians in nearly eight years. The United States’ abstention was the biggest rebuke in recent history to longstanding ally Israel, allowing the Security Council to condemn its settlements and continuing construction in Palestinian territory as a “flagrant violation” of international law.”
This resolution, although it does not include any sanctions in case of violation of this by Israel, states that Israel’s settlements on Palestinian territory have no legal validity and are an absolute violation of international law. Obama’s administration had been tough against Israel in this respect; the U.S. abstention is an unmistakable condemnation of Israel’s settlements, defying Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government and its alliance with Trump. Israel’s UN ambassador, Danny Danon, reacted with anger
“It was to be expected that Israel’s greatest ally would act in accordance with the values that we share and that they would have vetoed this disgraceful resolution. I have no doubt that the new US administration and the incoming UN Secretary General will usher in a new era in terms of the UN’s relationship with Israel.”
The adoption of this resolution is not such a big step for the Israeli-Palestine conflict, but it is symbolically a huge blow against Netanyahu’s growing far-right government and Trump’s unorthodox and out-of-place intervention in foreign issues.
