Clinton Declared Winner Over Trump Three Weeks Out

In 2012, Irish bookmaker Paddy Power called the presidential election for Barack Obama two days before Election Day. At that point, they started paying out money to the winning players. In 2016, they’ve taken an extremely more drastic step and called the election three weeks out from when voters will go to the polls. And the winning bet being paid out so early? Hillary Clinton.

After a disastrous few weeks for Republican standard bearer Donald Trump where he has been spiraling downward in the polls, Paddy Power stated heavy money was coming in on Clinton:

Trump gave it a hell of a shot going from a rank outsider to the Republican candidate but the recent flood of revelations have halted his momentum and his chances now look as patchy as his tan. Recent betting trends have shown one way traffic for Hillary and punters seemed to have called it 100% correct. Despite Trump’s Make America Great Again message appealing to many disillusioned voters, it looks as though America are going to put a woman in the White House.

They also stated they will be paying out move than $1 million in bets for those that picked the former Secretary of State.

While the company was correct in the 2012 election, they have made other calls that have gone wrong. Early calls on Tiger Woods in the 2009 PGA Championship and Manchester United in the 2013 Premier League ended up being costly mistakes.

Paddy Power is not alone in calling the election. Election handicapper Charlie Cook declared the election over nearly a week ago:
Take a close look at the new Fox News poll released tonight. This race is OVER.

Democratic strategist James Carville also delivered a eulogy for the Trump campaign in a recent fundraising email:

“It launched. It failed miserably. It died.”

It is certainly a bold move by Paddy Power to begin the payouts so early. There is little doubt Hillary Clinton has a huge lead in the Electoral College vote at this moment over Donald Trump, but a lot can happen in three weeks.

In fact, these early calls may be Trump’s best friend right now. Democrats may become complacent assuming easy victory and sit home, while Trump’s supporters hit the polls with max effort. But his campaign has been a disaster and laughingstock recently and a continuation of that mess will ensure Paddy Power made the right move, even so far out from November 8th.
