I’m Alive: Thanks Obama!
Tuesday, we got another dose of an Obamacare alternative when Republicans introduced another healthcare amendment. The amendment is another falls-short attempt at better healthcare. This one, like the last attempt at Trumpcare, sounds more like careless than care. It’s a good time to consider just how catastrophic higher healthcare costs would be, and examine how well Obamacare has worked for millions of people; including me.
Aside from being an intrepid writer, I am also the proud owner of a brand new, top -of-the-line, Medtronic A2DR01 Pacemaker – installed courtesy of the University of Florida Shands Medical Center. After a checkup in February, (I was born with a condition called Tetralogy of Fallot) a routine procedure was scheduled to shock my heart back into a regular rhythm.
But I went from easy-going cardiac patient to flat-lining on a procedure table faster than a Donald Trump Twitter Tirade. I woke up to a 200 lb nurse named Scott doing chest compressions in a Star Wars scrub top. (He would forever earn the nickname Star Wars). A week later and I was homeward bound; pacemaker installed and Near Death Experience behind me.
Had it not been for the Affordable Care Act, things may have been more bleak. Without insurance – if I could have been treated at all – the price tag would have been staggering.
When the bill finally arrived, I saw just how much Obamacare does for the middle class.
The notion that the ACA is a money pit connected to undocumented immigrants and impoverished lowlifes is the rhetoric that nourishes Trump cultists. They champion Christian morality while attacking the very people Jesus would have propped up. Yet, progressives are the problem? Seems legit to me, in case I haven’t said it enough: On behalf of my family and me, thanks Obama!
