America is under attack. This time, the foes are close to home.
Far right wing conservative Christians are engaged in a bizarre Jihad. A 67 year old Marietta, Georgia man has been accused of placing a backpack containing two pipe bombs in an Atlanta area public park. Michael Sibley confessed to police that he had planted the backpack, which contained two partially constructed pipe bombs, a copy of the Koran, and a list of “soft targets” for terrorist targeting; for example non-military targets such as schools and hospitals, in Vickery Creek Park. The park is located in Roswell, Georgia, a north Atlanta suburb. Sibley’s arrest report reads,
“He stated that he is a ‘patriot’ and he felt that no one was paying attention to what was going on in the world. Sibley felt that if he placed the package in a Roswell park then people would finally get that this type of activity could happen anywhere”
The backpack was found by a mother and daughter on November 4th, however, Sibley was arrested on Saturday by the FBI. Acting U.S. Attorney John Horn issued a statement to 11 Alive News which reads,
“The defendant allegedly placed a bag containing what appeared to be pipe bombs in Vickery Creek Park. This arrest should reassure the community that serious crimes like this will be investigated thoroughly and all leads followed to identify the perpetrator.
In another incident, a Texas woman has confessed to police to throwing a Molotov cocktail form of device at a Planned Parenthood clinic in South Austin.Melanie Marie Toney, age 52, initially denied throwing the bottle. She later admitted that she had thrown it, stating that, “it may have been smoldering.” Toney’s motives at the moment are murky. An anti-abortion group was holding a prayer vigil outside of the clinic when the incident occurred Monday night. Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas President, Ken Lambrecht stated to KVUE,
“The health and safety of anyone coming in or near Planned Parenthood Health Center is of the utmost importance to us.”
Apparently, vitriolic rhetoric and venom-infused diatribes are not having the desired impact upon the American public. Michael Sibley blatantly attempted to fan the flames of hatred and bigotry when he placed his package in a public park. He sought to inspire terror, the definition of an act of terrorism. His form of “educating” the public regarding the possibilities of terrorist attacks succeeded, just not in the manner which he intended. America should now be alerted to the bleak fact that terrorism has no set face. It may lurk behind the wide-eyed gaze of a fifty-two year old woman, or it may be twisting its tentacles around the warped mind of a ‘patriot’. The insidious voices in the minds of these individuals insist that their motives are pure. They firmly believe that their actions are justified, righteous in the eyes of their God. Melanie Toney may have been targeting the anti-abortion group, or she may have been targeting the clinic itself. Ultimately, her darkly, tortuously convoluted motives do not matter. She engaged in an act of terrorism, which should be acknowledged and prosecuted accordingly.
America, welcome to the new and improved jihad. The combatants are none other than ourselves. A war which no one will win.
