Trump Wants to Cut Food Stamps, Replace With Boxes of Disgusting Food
Trump Seems to Want to Bring America Back to the Bad Old Days of Powdered Milk and Cheese
Donald Trump, a man who claims to be all about reducing government intrusion into the lives of Americans, wants to know determine what food stamp recipients can eat. And, to make it worse, the food that Trump wants people to get is, to put it bluntly, CRAP!
For some bizarre reason, as The Hill reports, one of the ideas within Trump’s budget is to force anyone who is receiving $90 or more in food stamps through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to accept half of the benefits in the form of USDA food packages. This will affect about 80% of program recipients — that’s 16 million American households.
So, what are in these food boxes? Nothing fresh and nutritious, that’s for sure. NPR quotes the budget proposal that describes what recipients will get in their packages:
“[S]helf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit and vegetables.”
The Trump administration seems to see this approach as being more cost effective and insists that there will be “no loss in food benefits to participants.”
Trump seems to feel that states will be able to offer food to SNAP recipients cheaper than they can get it in stores, and this will save $213 billion and reduce the size of the program by 30%. Unfortunately, Trump hasn’t actually produced any evidence that this will be the case.
Jeff Borg, CEO of Hunger Free America, released a statement on their website rightfully blasting the Trump administration for this proposal.
“It would require a massive new governmental bureaucracy to micro-manage the food consumption of low-income Americans. Amazingly, this proposal would slash food aid but somehow manage to grow the size of big government. There’s no way one can improve nutritional outcomes in families on SNAP by reducing the amount of money they have available for fresh fruits, vegetables, and milk. This proposal would add stress to the nonprofits that serve these individuals and hurt the grocery industry by taking SNAP participants out of the grocery store.”
As one can imagine, those who are going to be affected the most by these changes are children, the elderly, those with disabilities, and minority communities. The United States Department of Agriculture breaks down the stats on who receives SNAP benefits (quoted from Wikipedia):
49% of all participant households have children (17 or younger), and 55% of those are single-parent households.
15% of all participant households have elderly (age 60 or over) members.
20% of all participant households have non-elderly disabled members.
The average gross monthly income per food stamp household is $731; The average net income is $336.
37% of participants are White, 22% are African-American, 10% are Hispanic, 2% are Asian, 4% are Native American, and 19% are of unknown race or ethnicity.
So, when it comes to Trump’s rich buddies and big corporations, Trump is against government over reach and regulations. But, when it comes to feeding America’s most vulnerable citizens, he has NO problem with micromanaging and determining exactly what foods they will be given to eat. That is Republican greed and hypocrisy at it’s finest.
