Hispanic Trump Surrogates Are Resigning Or Rescinding Their Support

Backlash is mounting against the Republican presidential nominee’s speech on immigration.

According to Politico, several prominent Latino Trump surrogates have rescinded their support for the Republican presidential nominee following a widely criticized immigration speech on Wednesday night. Jacob Monty is a member of Trump’s National Hispanic Advisory Council. He recalls what attracted him to Trump in the first place:

“I was a strong supporter of Donald Trump when I believed he was going to address the immigration problem realistically and compassionately,”

He was disappointed by Trump’s speech:

“What I heard today was not realistic and not compassionate.”

Monty, along with other Latino leaders, had met with Trump at his eponymous Tower recently to discuss the border issue. “When we met [earlier in August] he was going to approach this issue with a realistic plan,” Monty says, “a compassionate plan, with a plan that was not disruptive to the immigrants that were here that were not lawbreakers.”

“He didn’t deliver any of that.”

Alfonso Aguilar is the president of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles. Once a critic of Trump, the staunch conservative says he “took a chance” by supporting him. After hearing Trump’s immigration speech, Aguilar says he’s inclined to withdraw his support:

“It’s so disappointing because we feel we took a chance, a very risky chance. We decided to make a big U-turn to see if we could make him change. We thought we were moving in the right direction … we’re disappointed. We feel misled.”

He later added:

“I can tell you there’s a real possibility we will withdraw support from Donald Trump because of that disappointing speech.”
