Hispanic Trump Surrogates Are Resigning Or Rescinding Their Support
Backlash is mounting against the Republican presidential nomineeās speech on immigration.
According toĀ Politico, several prominent Latino Trump surrogates haveĀ rescindedĀ their supportĀ for the Republican presidential nomineeĀ following a widely criticizedĀ immigration speech on Wednesday night. Jacob Monty is a member of Trumpās National Hispanic Advisory Council. He recalls what attracted him to Trump in the first place:
āI was a strong supporter of Donald Trump when I believed he was going to address the immigration problem realistically and compassionately,ā
He was disappointed by Trumpās speech:
Monty, along with other Latino leaders, had met with Trump at his eponymous Tower recently to discuss the border issue. āWhen we met [earlier in August] he was going to approach this issue with a realistic plan,ā Monty says, āa compassionate plan, with a plan that was not disruptive to the immigrants that were here that were not lawbreakers.ā
āHe didnāt deliver any of that.ā
Alfonso Aguilar is the president of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles. Once a critic of Trump, the staunch conservative says he ātook a chanceā by supporting him. After hearing Trumpās immigration speech, Aguilar says heās inclined to withdraw his support:
āItās so disappointing because we feel we took a chance, a very risky chance. We decided to make a big U-turn to see if we could make him change. We thought we were moving in the right direction ⦠weāre disappointed. We feel misled.ā
He later added:
āI can tell you thereās a real possibility we will withdraw support from Donald Trump because of that disappointing speech.ā
