This Is Trump’s America Jacked Up On Fake News And Armed With Weapons
Well, here is a clear case of fake news gone bad. When people are led to believe utter and complete BS conspiracy theories on the internet, and then given access to weapons, you have a mess like what went down on Sunday in Washington, DC.
The Hill is reporting that Edgar Maddison Welch of Salisbury, NC, was taken into custody after showing up at Comet Ping Pong pizza restaurant in the capital city. It is this place where online fake news sites had reported that high level Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, were running a child sex ring from.
As BBC reports, the “PizzaGate” story was, of course, a complete load of garbage that was conjured up by “alt-right” idiots online who’s loathing for Hillary Clinton was so immense that they would do anything to make her look evil, even linking her to a disgusting paedophile ring that just didn’t exist.
“Users of 4chan, a message board known for free speech, extreme content and trollish behaviour, began posting speculation and supposed connections gleaned from internet searches. They trawled [Comet restaurant owner James] Alefantis’ Instagram feed for pictures of children and the modern art which lines his restaurant’s walls, and dreamt up a paedophile sex ring involving prominent politicians and political donors.”
But, as the Washington Post outlines, the fact that the story was false and debunked long ago didn’t prevent Edgar from falling for it hook line and sinker and taking up the opportunity to “self-investigate” the situation – while brandishing a loaded assault rifle.

“[He] walked in the front door of Comet Ping Pong and pointed a firearm in the direction of a restaurant employee. The employee was able to flee and notify police. Police said Welch proceeded to discharge the rifle inside the restaurant; they believe all other occupants had fled when Welch began shooting. Welch has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.”
Wow, who would have thought making up malicious fake news stories that would rile people up so much that they would issue death threats against the innocent family of the owner of a pizza restaurant would end up with a paranoid, conspiracy theory loving gun-nut showing up at said restaurant with a loaded weapon?[contentblock id=7 img=gcb.png]
Yup, pretty much anyone. This, ladies and gentlemen, is what happens when fake news is allowed to fester. It comes back to bite you, with extremists showing up near the gates of the White House ready to act on the emotions those fake news stories draw out in people.
