George W. Bush Blasts Trump’s Assault On The Free Press (VIDEO)
George W. Bush: ‘we all need answers’
George W. Bush, former Republican president, opened up about Donald Trump’s travel ban, assault to the media and ties with Russia and has given his take on the issues. In an in-depth interview on NBC’s Today show, the former president spoke against the new immigration policies and the war with the media declaring that holding the government acountable is “indispensable to democracy”. When asked whether he supported the ban of seven Muslim-majority countries, as quoted by The Guardian, Bush said:
“I am for an immigration policy that is welcoming and that upholds the law.”
His position carries even more importance considering his presidency was so strongly shaped by the 9/11 terror attacks and the strict security measures enacted. Yet, president Bush has called for religious tolerance reiterating that this is one of the country’s greatest strengths.
Amid the increasing tensions between Trump and the media, with President Donald Trump referring to the press as “the enemy of the American people”, former president George W. Bush took an opposing standpoint, reminiscing on his time as President when he used to push Russia towards a free press and told host Matt Lauer:
“I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy. That we need the media to hold people like me to account. I mean, power can be very addictive and it can be corrosive, and it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power, whether it be here or elsewhere… And it’s kind of hard to, you know, tell others to have an independent, free press when we’re not willing to have one ourselves.”
The former President also addressed the controversy over Trump’s advisers and their ties with Russia:
“I think we all need answers. I’m not sure the right avenue to take. I am sure, though, that that question needs to be answered.”
Although the former President held short on making any comparisons between his period and the current administration, as well as on the progress (if any) President Trump has done on unifying such a divided America, Bush declared:
“You have to take the man for his word that he wants to unify the country. We’ll see if he’s able to do so.”
He still holds some hope; however, the former President made it clear he does not agree with any of the measures that have been adopted in this past month.
