Yikes! Donald Trump Wants To Bring Back “Enhanced Interrogation,” And “Do Things That We Never Did Before.”
“We’re going to have to do things that we never did before,” Donald Trump told Yahoo! News on Thursday. The GOP presidential front-runner didn’t mention the vile “enhanced interrogation” techniques that we used illegally in the years following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Instead, Trump was focused on something just as illegal and just as scary: Tracking all Muslims on U.S. soil in a database.
“And some people are going to be upset about it, but I think that now everybody is feeling that security is going to rule. And certain things will be done that we never thought would happen in this country in terms of information and learning about the enemy. And so we’re going to have to do certain things that were frankly unthinkable a year ago.”
Donald Trump also swore he’d close our borders to Syrian refugees and add any that get in to his list of 11.2 immigrants destined for forced deportations. No wonder ABC’s George Stephanopoulos wanted more specifics. On Sunday’s edition of This Week,Stephanopoulos zeroed in and asked whether Trump thinks we need to bring back “enhanced interrogation” techniques like waterboarding.
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: You’ve also told Yahoo! News that we have to be doing things that were unthinkable a year ago. I want to get into what you had in mind. For example, do you think we should bring back enhanced interrogation like waterboarding?
With his trademark bluntness, Donald Trump came out in favor of waterboarding because “we have to be strong” and “we have to be tough.”
DONALD TRUMP: Well, we have to be strong. You know, they don’t use waterboarding over there; they use chopping off people’s heads. They use drowning people. I don’t know if you’ve seen with the cages, where they put people in cages and they drown them in the ocean and they lift out the cage. And we’re talking about waterboarding. We have to be tough.
So, just for the record, Stephanopoulos asked point-blank if Donald Trump would bring back waterboarding:
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: So you’d bring back waterboarding?
Hell yes, of course The Donald would bring this notorious form of “enhanced interrogation” — also known as torture — back. Why? Because waterboarding is “peanuts” compared to what DAESH (formerly called ISIS) does.
DONALD TRUMP: We have to — I would bring it back, yes. I would bring it back. I think waterboarding is peanuts compared to what they’d do to us, what they’re doing to us, what they did to James Foley when they chopped off his head. That’s a whole different level and I would absolutely bring back interrogation and strong interrogation.
That’s right. Because DAESH beheads innocent people, it’s okay for us to use
“enhanced interrogation” torture on people who also may be innocent. Leave it to Republicans like Donald Trump to violate people’s human rights and civil liberties in the name of “freedom.” Never mind that a bipartisan Senate report from Dec. 2014 found that — when it comes to obtaining useful intelligence — torture doesn’t even work.
