“Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid & comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason…”
U.S. Code-Title 18-Part I -Chapter 115-§ 2381

It was as disgusting as it was shocking. An America president stood side by side with a brutal, murderous Russian dictator on the world stage — on live television watched around the world by conceivably hundreds of millions of people — and threw the entire United States defense community under the bus, refusing to acknowledge what we all now know was a deliberate, sustained cyber attack on the United States.

Just days after Special Counsel Robert Mueller announced the indictment of 12 Russian nationals in the ongoing probe of Russian election meddling and possible collusion with the Trump presidential campaign, Donald Trump made his way to Helsinki on Monday, for a much-hyped summit with Russian President and former KGB agent Vladimir Putin.

In a press conference after the two-hour private meeting, in which there were very notably no other Americans present, Trump disgracefully defended the Russian president, saying he offered an  “extremely strong and powerful” denial of the attacks. In one of the most stunning points of the presser, Trump responded to one reporter who asked whether he believed his own intelligence agencies, or Putin, as follows:

“(The US intel community) said they think it’s Russia. I have President Putin; he just said it’s not Russia…I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be. I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today.”

He also called the entire Mueller investigation;

“a disaster for our country.”

While the presser was still live, social media — very notably, Trump’s platform of choice, Twitter — was erupting with outraged responses, coming from both sides of the political spectrum. Celebrities also quickly reacted. And in full disclosure, I myself had to vent.

The Mueller investigation aside, there is no question, now, that Donald Trump betrayed his country, and the oath of office. The only question left is will the craven Republicans that control our congress act before more damage is done?
