Pope Francis: Donald Trump Is Not A Christian
Pope Francis summarized the immigration proposals of Donald Trump in a way few world or political leaders could: “This is not gospel.”
Speaking to reporters as he traveled back to Vatican City from a weeklong Western Hemisphere trip through Mexico and Cuba, the Pontiff minced no words when addressing the Republican candidate’s proposed wall on the United States’ southern border:
“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not of building bridges, is not Christian. This is not the gospel”
Trump, who launched his campaign with a barrage of racially charged attacks on Mexican immigrants, calling them “rapists” and “criminals” may have used his brand of xenophobia to launch to the top of the Republican field in 2016, but the spiritual leader of the estimated 1.2 billion Catholics across the globe (and approximately 70 million in the United States) offered a much more humane and measured opinion about the border between the United States and Mexico.
“A Humanitarian Crisis.”
While touring Mexico, Pope Francis said mass before a crowd of 200,000 devoted people in Ciudad, Jarez while over 30,000 viewed the mass across the Rio Grande in El Paso, Texas. With the faithful listening along the shared border, the pope offered a harsh criticism of both Mexican and American political leadership for what he deemed a “human tragedy” and a “humanitarian crisis”.
Pope Francis Would Not Tell Catholics How To Vote.
When asked if he would instruct American Catholics, Pope Francis refused to interfere in American electoral politics the way his predecessors have, instead he offered this not-so-subtle analysis of Trump, who claims to be a practicing Presbyterian:
“As far as what you said about whether I would advise to vote or not to vote, I am not going to get involved in that. I say only that this man is not Christian if he has said things like that.”
Pope Francis is hardly the first Christian to question the values that Trump campaigns on, but he’s clearly the highest profile. As the GOP Primaries move South into the so-called Bible Belt, it will be fascinating to see if the narrative shifts to the proposals of Donald Trump juxtaposed against traditional biblical values.
